Argentina: Day 1

On this day, we woke up early and watched the ship pull into port. We were greeted with a beautiful European-like skyline. While awaiting the ship to be cleared and the diplomatic briefing to conclude, Jenna, Lauren T, Dacotah, and I headed up the Lisa and Beverly’s room. Lisa and Bev are two lifelong learners we met on the ship. They are Dacotah’s ‘extended family’ on the ship that we all have made friends with over the last few months. Lisa’s brother and Bev’s son Scott is a SAS alumni who invented Crocs.

We sat with Bev talking about everyone’s experiences onboard and about Bev’s long and interesting life. When Lisa returned we headed out for the day to explore the city of Buenos Aires. Traveling along with the six of us were two more lifelong learners Ann, a lady of 91 years, and Joan who is a senior from Washington DC.

Our original plan was to explore the city on the On/Off bus that hits all the main attractions. However, traveling with 3 senior citizens sharing a wheelchair through a city with EXTREMELY rough sidewalks takes longer than one would expect. Also, being a weekday, traffic was bad and the buses were not traveling well through the city. So we decided to just enjoy a nice sit down lunch.

We traveled down the street to Las Nazarenas, an Argentinean steak house where they cooked large slabs of meet over open fires inside the restaurant. After we ate our lunch and enjoyed a great deal of fantastic conversation, we went outside the hail a cab (we were not walking back to the ship this time). The butcher from the restaurant through his apron over his shoulder and assisted the hostess in this ordeal. After finding a suitable cab for the 3 eldest ladies, Jenna, and the wheelchair we said goodbye and headed out to find a hotel for the night.

Earlier in the afternoon, the girls and I decided we could not stand another night on the ship. We need a night or two away so we headed out to look for a hotel with Lisa. We checked prices on several hotels and met many Argentinean soccer (futbol) players before we decided on the Sheraton.

We headed back to the ship to pack up our things and headed to the Sheraton. Jenna and Dacotah headed out to buy a few bottles of wine and we spent the night relaxing, calling home, drinking wine, and watching a movie in some of the most comfortable beds we have slept in for months.

(Yes...I am washing my feet in the bidet.)
