Uruguay: Day 1

We headed off the ship and were immediately greeted by the old city section of Montevideo. There was no taking a shuttle through loads of cargo, instead we just walked about 100 yards and were welcomed by many small shops, grocery stores, and street vendors.

This is the first time Semester at Sea ever ported in Uruguay and we were welcomed by many. Our arrival was put on the front page of the newspaper and expressed the hopes that this trip would bring a boost to their declining tourism industry.

We spent the morning and afternoon walking around through the shops and the vendors stopping occasionally to ask directions or practice our Spanish with the locals. After a long, hot day out we headed back to the ship where Lauren S. and I cleaned up and got ourselves ready for a night of tango, traditional gaucho dancing, and carnival put on as dinner and a show.

After a beautiful evening filled with tricks and dancing, we were kissed goodbye on the cheek by one of the old singers and bid farewell.
